Subject Overview
Who?
People who are currently in need of a way to memorize various terms and words. They might be a student enrolled in an educational program or in a new job where they are learning new terms.
When?
This application is meant to be used on-the-go for quick 5 to10-minute study sessions. Or longer study sessions if they desire it.
Why?
It can be difficult to keep track of all the jargon when studying a new discipline. Students and other individuals need a way to methodically categorize, reference, and study new vocabulary and concepts so they can move forward confidently in their field.
What?
A mobile application focused on learning new vocabulary.
Where?
Users can use this app on a bus or train, waiting between classes, on a lunch break, etc.

Problem Statement
How can we design a mobile app that allows people to easily incorporate vocabulary learning into their daily schedule in a way that empowers them to stay consistent?

My Solution
A flashcard app that helps to encourage and advance peoples learning and communication skills with new and engaging vocabulary words at their fingertips. With this app they can:

-
Upload Vocabulary words with images
-
Organize vocab into decks and folders
-
Set up a study schedule
-
Search up words and get recommendations to similar words and topics.

My Role

UX Researcher
For this role I was the UX researcher tasked with learning more about the potential users for this vocabulary word app. I conducted competitive analysis, interviews, user personas and Information Architectures.
High-fidelity prototypes were not my main focus for this project but I sketched some paper wireframes and created a low-fidelity prototype to have a basic understanding of the visuals.
Research
Competitive analysis:
I conducted competitive analysis for 3 apps and focused on the positives and negatives of each app. The apps were Quizlet, Anki PRO and Chegg Prep.
The first potential competitor that I analyzed was Quizlet. This app is a vocabulary word app that includes flashcards, quizzes and games for learning.

The second competitor that I analyzed was Anki PRO. This app allows users to create their own flashcards to study and provides a library of hundreds of word decks.

The third competitor that I analyzed was Chegg Prep. This app allows users to search millions of flashcards by other users and allows you to create your own and quiz yourself and others.

Interviews
Interview research goals were to:
-
Determine users responsibilities and daily routines
-
Determine challenges in learning new vocabulary words.
-
Learn about users successes and failure in learning new vocabulary words.
-
determine any patterns in the study tools that the participants used and to determine the most liked and least liked tools
“I absolutely have (used flashcards), they are incredibly useful and backed up by research, but there are ways to use them that are more effective than others”
After conducting interviews with users who use vocabulary apps, I learned that:
-
Users thought that flashcards were good for memorization but lacked context
-
A flashcard program would benefit from having additional information besides just term and definition.
-
Adding images/examples would be helpful and having categories for the flashcards would help with organization.
-
A consistent review schedule and ensuring appropriate review of mastered/developing material would also be helpful.
-
The ability to test themselves would be helpful

“Flashcards are very convenient because you can study them anywhere”,
“I think flashcards that went beyond simple word-definition links and provided context, images, additional information would be useful”.

“flash cards (should) encourage knowledge not memorization,(have a) consistent review schedule, and ensure that the ones that are mastered are seen much less often than ones that are still developing”.
